History of Pirta
Formerly in the business of insulation, father-son duo Howard Atkin and Rob Atkin began experimenting with passive cooling systems in 2021. They put their combined 59 years of engineering experience to work in order to find a solution to the heat crisis plaguing cities and industries worldwide.
Inspiration came from the remarkable silkworm, which protects itself during metamorphosis with a cocoon that can withstand equatorial heat, humidity, and sun exposure. Using their North Yorkshire garage as a makeshift lab, they worked closely with the University of Leeds, which provided high quality testing at each stage of Pirta paint’s development.
The University of Leeds was able to verify that the paint created by Howard Atkin and Rob Atkin was both highly reflective, making it resistant to absorbing heat, and highly emissive, allowing it to give off heat. As a result, Pirta has produced the most effective passive cooling system available.
